Richard Tanner is found dead in the middle of a model village in Little Worthy. He has been stabbed and trussed like Gulliver in Gulliver’s Travels. Tanner was a local lad who had been engaged to the local school teacher, Rebecca Rix, but had broken off the engagement. Strangely the local schoolchildren had been recently drawing Gulliver.
The model village is owned by sisters Harriet and Hilary Compton and is run by for them by Bob Moss. Tanner’s latest girlfriend is Christa, daughter of the local hotel owner, Edward Palfrey. It becomes apparent that Christa and Tanner were together in the model village on the night of the murder. Christa left Tanner alive. Rebecca Rix reveals that it was Edward Palfrey that suggested the Gulliver theme to the schoolchildren.
Little Worthy has an annual boat race. The boat race starts well but towards the end Christa is found dead by Joyce Barnaby. She has been stabbed by a trident that was supposed to have been carried by Mike Johnson from the craft shop. It is later found that the bodkin that stabbed Tanner was sold by the craft shop.
The Compton sisters receive a model policeman through their letter box, which they mention to Barnaby. Before he solves the mystery of the policeman, Harriet is found battered to death in her private chapel. Outside grave stones have been smashed. Barnaby calls on Moss and finds him brandishing a blood soaked hammer. He doesn’t believe Moss did the killing, buty suspects he is covering for someone. Moss tells Barnaby that the gravestones were graves for some of the little models that were past their time. Barnaby deduces that Moss and Hilary had had a love child, and that child grew up to be Bernice, a maid at the hotel that is in love with Edward Palfrey. Bernice is somewhat simple and has a soft spot for the model village and its little people. It was Bernice who killed the people, because they abused the model village.
