Freda Leslie Dargert was born in 1923 in Hitchin. Her father and grandfather were accomplished amateur painters and encouraged the young Leslie in her artistic endeavours. After the Second World War Leslie emigrated to America and started painting street scenes of her American home town. In 1962 she returned from America and again lived in Hitchin. She continued painting local scenes and people in and around Hitchin. She has shown her work at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Leslie Dargert died in 2011.
The painting is oil on board and dates to 1990. It is part of the Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery collection. The view from the car park today is partly obscured on the left hand side by a public convenience. Either the public convenience post dates 1990, or less likely the artist perched on the flat roof. The flamboyant colours of the market stalls may be artistic licence.
