In Bethlehem's Downtown area is the City Center Complex, which is a place where several government buildings are arranged, including the Bethlehem Area Public Library.
Access to the complex is available from West Church Street. There is street-side parking (feed the meters). The library is the building on the right when walking onto the plaza. It is a modern building that was built in 1967 - date entered below.
As far back as the 1700s, there was a library in Bethlehem - as a subscription type. On Feb. 1, 1901, the first public library in Bethlehem was opened. The library moved around over the years until it was moved to this location in 1967 in a building that was built specifically for the library. There is also a South Branch located within the city. This branch has about 150,000 books and has many other items such as CD/DVDs, e-books, and periodicals.
Today, the library not only serves the city of Bethlehem, but several other surrounding communities, as well. The population it serves is approximately 125,000.
