In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the
City of Trail, their sister city, Tsukui, Japan gave Trail this Ishidoro which was mounted in Rotary Park. The City of Trail was incorporated exactly 100 years previous, on June 14th, 1901.
An Ishidoro is a Japanese stone lantern. Though they originated in China, they are now most common in Japan and were traditionally used only in the gardens of Buddhist temples to light the pathways.
Trail has two sister cities, Tsukui-machi, Kanagawa-ken, Japan and Bocchigliero, Italy. Trail and Tsukui-machi were twinned in 1991.
This Ishidoro has been mounted on a low plinth of granite bricks toward the eastern edge of Rotary Park. The park itself is a small green space adorned with flower and shrub plantings, benches and picnic tables, as well as a gazebo.
The plaque reads:
