In the 18th and 19th centuries Stony Stratford was an important stopping off point on Watling Street. Coaching Inns developed along the High St, including the Cock Hotel and the Bull Hotel.
As well as providing respite for the travellers, the travellers provided a news service to the locals of Stony Stratford. There was great rivalry between the two hotels about which hotel had the most interesting and outlandish stories. This led to the term “Cock & bull story” coming into widespread use.
