Withnail and I is the story of two dissolute out of work actors, Withnail and Marwood. Marwood narrates the tale in the film and is “I”. The pair decide that a change is needed in their lives, they will take a trip into the country. Withnail’s gay Uncle Monty has a country cottage and Withnail arranges the loan of the cottage from him.

Having arranged the loan of the cottage Withnail and Marwood head north in Marwood’s clapped out Jag. The holiday turns into a disaster. It never stops raining, the cottage is cold and damp, and they have no food. Withnail manages to make an enemy of a local poacher. Late at night they hear noises downstairs and believe it to be Jake breaking in, but it is Monty that has come to stay with them.

Monty has plenty of food and wine and spirits are soon raised. However, it becomes apparent that Withnail told Uncle Monty that Marwood was gay. This gives Marwood considerable problems. Marwood manages to quell Monty’s advances by claiming to be Withnail’s lover. Monty leaves the next morning.

Marwood gets a telegram about an acting part and insists they return to London. WIthnail takes to driving the Jag whilst Marwood sleeps. Unfortunately Withnail is drunk and has no driving licence. They are soon pulled over by the police.

Back at their flat in London Marwood realises that he has a lead in a play. He tidies himself up for the audition and the pair realise that it is the end of the road for their dissolute relationship.
