The magnificient Edinburgh Castle is home to a variety of ghosts.
A vengeful prisoner Once, a prisoner to the castles dungeon hid in a barrow full of dung hoping to thus escape. To his misfortune, the barrow he was hiding in was emptied over the rocky slopes of the castle rock, sending him to death. From time to time, visitors to the castle have reported an apparition, smelling very unpleasantly, that tries to push them over the battlements. So beware when you step close to the cliffs!
The headless drummer Often, unexplained ghostly drumming can be heard at the castle. Yet, the ghost shows himself only shortly before the castle is attacked - this has been a while now. He is said to appear as a headless boy in traditional clothing. Who he is and why he protects the castle is unknown.
The ghostly piper There are many underground tunnels and passages under Edinburgh castle, some of them long forgotten. Once, such a tunnel entry was discovered. To investigate, a lone piper was send into the tunnel so that his music could be followed at the surface. Suddenly, the music stopped. Although the piper was immediately searched for, no trace of him could be found, but from time to time, unexplained piping can faintly be heard around the castle grounds until today.
The Lady of Glamis The Lady of Glamis was imprisoned in the castle's dungeons and finally burned cruelly for witchcraft in 1537. You might still meet her spectre in various parts of the castle.
A ghost dog At some nights, unexplained howling and barking can be heard from the castle's dog cemetery. Why the dog's soul is restless is unknown.
And it is all scientifically proven! In 2001, Dr Richard Wiseman conducted a study about paranormal activities in the castle. For this, he recruited 250 people who all had no knowledge about the castle being haunted. After they spent the night in various parts of the castle, a large part of them reported abnormal, sometimes terrifying experiences.
Please note that there is an entrance fee for the castle. There is no refund if you do not see or hear any ghosts, though. The coordinates point to the castle's haunted pet cemetery.
Public access?: The castle is one of the city's major tourists attractions and thus can be visited during the opening times.
