EN: The railway station of Biel is located south of the city center near the lake shore. The first station opened in 1857, but it was relocated twice and has been at the current location since 1923. The neo-classical building with the temple-like front facade were designed by the architects Moser and Schürch, who won the public competition for the new station in the year 1916.
Biel/Bienne (the city is totally bilingual, so the official name contains the German and the French variant) is an important hub for the region northwest of Bern. With over 50,000 passengers on an average day, it is one of the ten busiest railway stations in the country. During the day there is a train leaving the station every three minutes.
The station is a stop for Intercity trains between Basel and the Lake Geneva region as well as from northeastern Switzerland to Geneva. There are several RegioExpress connections to destinations in the cantons Bern, Jura, and Neuchâtel; and it is the starting point of six different regional lines, one of them narrow gauge.
DE: Der Bahnhof von Biel liegt südlich der Innenstadt nahe dem Seeufer. Die erste Station im Jahre 1857 eröffnet, aber sie wurde zweimal verschoben und befindet sich seit 1923 an der aktuellen Position. Das neuklassizistische Hauptgebäude mit der tempelartigen Säulenfront stammt von den Architekten Moser und Schürch, die damit einen öffentliche Wettbewerb im Jahre 1916 gewannen.
Biel/Bienne (die Stadt ist völlig zweisprachig, deshalb enthält der offizielle Name die deutsche und die französische Variante) ist ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt für die Region nordwestlich von Bern. Mit über 50.000 Passagieren an einem durchschnittlichen Tag ist es eines der zehn verkehrsreichsten Bahnhöfe der Schweiz. Während des Tages verlässt den Bahnhof alle drei Minuten ein Zug.
Die Station ist eine Haltestelle für Intercity-Züge zwischen Basel und der Genferseeregion sowie aus dem Nordosten der Schweiz nach Genf. Es gibt mehrere Regioexpress-Verbindungen zu Zielen in den Kantonen Bern, Jura und Neuenburg; und es ist der Ausgangspunkt von sechs verschiedenen Regionalstrecken, eine von ihnen eine Schmalspurbahn.
