The lander is named after Philae Island in the Nile, where an obelisk was found that was used along with the Rosetta Stone to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics.

The Philae column was taken from the island of Philae in the Nile to Kingston Lacey, a country house in Dorset where it can be seen in the garden.

The lander made it's landing on the comet on 12 November 2014.
