This turtle was slowly crossing the road near the Terrace Park in Sioux Falls (South Dakota) USA. We tried to pick up and help it to cross, but suddenly, it started to move really fast! Just have time to take two or three pictures and it disappeared heading in the direction of the lake.
Latter, we identified it as a western painted turtle.
The painted turtle is the most widespread native turtle of North America. It lives in slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to Louisiana and northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Describe what happened. Example
"Mother Blanding had made her nest between the goldenrod and bluestem outside my window late last June.
By chance we were sitting on the porch when we noticed little blandings in the same location we had seen the mother take 2 months earlier."
