Das Dessauer Residenzschloss wurde ursprünglich 1341 aus den Steinen der vom Mulde-Hochwasser zerstörten Burg Waldeser, auch Burg Waldersee, errichtet. Das Schloss brannte 1405 und 1467 ab. Ein Neubau erfolgte durch die Dessauer Fürstenbrüder Johann IV. (1504–1551), Georg III. (1507–1553) und Joachim (1509–1561)als Vierflügelanlage.
1708 ließ Fürst Leopold den Nordflügel abbrechen.
Wie viele Bauwerke, hatte auch das Dessauer Residenzschloss unter dem Bombenregen vom 7. März 1945 stark gelitten und brannte fast vollständig aus.
Während der DDR-Zeit, stand die Ruine des Dessauer Schlosses den Plänen zum Straßenaufbau im Weg. Daraufhin ließ man den Süd- und den Ostflügel Sprengen.
Von 1990 bis 1997 und 2001 bis 2005 wurde der Johannbau mit Mitteln der Stadt Dessau, des Bundes, des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt und der Lotto-Toto GmbH Sachsen-Anhalt saniert und in seiner ursprünglichen Gestalt mit den Rundbogengiebeln wiederhergestellt. 1993 wurden von der Südwand Putzreste mit einer Illusionsmalerei aus dem Jahr 1549 abgenommen und konserviert. Das Innere des Johannbaus ist im Krieg vollständig verloren gegangen. Es wurden daher neue Decken und Wände eingezogen und Raumstrukturen geschaffen. Das Innere des Treppenturms war, trotz der starker Brandspuren, in seiner Substanz weitgehend erhalten und konnte rekonstruiert werden. Die Haube des Treppenturms wurde wieder in ihre ursprüngliche Form gebracht. Lediglich der Altan ist noch nicht komplett rekonstruiert.

The Dessauer Royal Palace was originally from the stones of the ruined castle of trough-flood Waldesian, also Walderseestraße castle, built in 1341. The castle burned down in 1405 and 1467. A rebuilt by the Dessauer prince brothers John IV. (1504-1551), George III. (1507-1553) and Joachim (1509-1561) as four wings.

During the communist era, the ruins of the castle stood Dessauer's plans for road construction in the way. Then you let the south and the east wing blasting.
