Part of backcountry and wilderness hiking is the necessity of finding good water. An occasional general store is not a bad thing either.
The one nearby does offer a land phone. The trails overlap for over 20 miles. They meet from the north at Twin Peaks in the Granite Chief Wilderness at an elevation of 8,420 ft.
There is a register, overview map, at the trailhead.
public restrooms are available nearby (& big enough to change in).
Hikers are over 7,000 feet at Echo and Dick's Peak (about 1/2 way) is over 9,000 ft. No lakes on the northern half until Richardson or Miller. www.TomHarrisonmaps.com
Good boots are imperative on granite.
Permits are required for the Desolation wilderness Area. www.fs.usda.gov/ltbmu 530 543-2600
