Fortrose Cathedral was constructed in the 13th century. Today, the ruins of the chapter house, the nave's south aisle, and the churchyard cemetery are all that remain.

A sign at the entrance to the churchyard reads:

"Generations of local people were buried here after the Protestant Reformation of 1560 ultimately shut down the cathedral. A mort bell, dated 1630, was rung at the front of funeral processions."

Therefore, like other Scottish ex-cathedrals, the Fortrose Cathedral grounds remained in use as a graveyard. An estimated 100 graves are located in this cemetery.
