The Captive Artist mural was completed in 2010

Sveva Caetani emigrated to Vernon, British Columbia in 1921. Sveva was educated by private tutors and governesses, as well as Crofton House School in Vancouver.

The Duke of Sermoneta lost much of his fortune in 1929, and when he died in 1935, Sveva's life changed dramatically. Her mother became mentally and physically ill, and it was at this time that her mother began demanding Sveva stay at home. She was not allowed to engage in creating any form of artwork, and for the years she remained captive in the family home.

In 1960, her mother died, leaving Sveva to pursue both independence and her artistic pursuits. In 1989, she began painting a series of fifty-six watercolors entitled Recapitulation that reflected her life.

Sveva's Recapitulation series was bequeathed to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and her remaining paintings and her estate were donated to the City of Vernon upon her death in 1994.

All the murals are well done paying tribute to the artist's talent and creativity for any passersby to enjoy.

The murals are numbered and we will showcase

3009 32nd Avenue

Featuring Vernon artist Sveva Caetani, The Captive artist captures the story of a woman trapped in her home by her distraught mother.

Artist: Michelle Loughery

The very first mural was created in the fall of 1998 and over the course of the next 15 years the lead artist, along with local youth, painted an additional 27 murals.

Downtown Vernon’s outdoor art gallery was made possible through funding from HRDC, investment by downtown businesses and local organizations, as well as the City of Vernon.

The Vernon Museum and Archives provided original content and photos.

The murals are visited by hundreds of people each year and continue to be a wonderful way to tell Vernon’s story.
