Bernard Avenue was the first mural in Vernon. It shows life in the 1900s. The lady is dignified standing there looking at the passersby of that era.
Though Vernon claims that this mural does not exist, it is there high above Welk's Mart on 30th Avenue. From this vantage point one can only see the lady, however if you go around the block to the back side of Welk's Mart you can view (partially) Mr. Barnard in the carriage. Granted, this one is more difficult to appreciate but none the less well worth viewing. Vernon must have learned from this first mural and its location.
Bernard Avenue at one time, 30th Avenue was Barnard Ave and you can still see Barnard on the base of some of the street signs. Barnard Ave used to have unpaved roads and wooden sidewalks.
In 1911, after receiving complaints about reckless drivers travelling too fast and furiously down Barnard Ave, Vernon City Council had to impose a speed limit of 25km/hr.
All the murals are well done paying tribute to the artist's talent and creativity for any passersby to enjoy.
The murals are numbered and we will showcase
