Marker Text: "In Commemoration"
This memorial plaque is dedicated in tribute to the thousands of Ukrainian immigrants who were invited by the Government of Canada to accept "free lands" in Western Canada.
They were given 1/4 sections of land in areas where soils were unfertile, story or swampy. The male family members had to leave spouses and children to work part-time as itinerant bush, mine, railway and harvest workers to supplement their meager income.
Further to their misfortunes, those who misunderstood their struggles subjected them to ridicule and intolerance.
The internment period during World War I, the general strike of 1919 and the depression of the 1930's added to the hardships of our people.
Today, we humbly proclaim to tose glorious pioneers,
"Well done, you have contributed to the growth and fabric of Canada."
"Eternal memory"
