This territory was still immersed in the Roman period when clay sediments, sand dunes and shingle the final cut of the ocean to the year one thousand.
The man was not slow to exploit the sand, showing ditches and depressions; ground water, since flush, reveals the freshwater bodies subsidiary to the brackish lagoon, some still flooded by storms.
Muddy foreshore, dry dunes and failures, marshes and reedbeds, wet meadows, hedgerows tamarisk groves and thickets ... A beautiful mosaic of environments settled on this piece of coast, hosting a multitude of species ....

Natural Reserve of the Marsh of Yves (53rd name) extends over 192 ha and is located in the Charente-Maritime between La Rochelle and Rochefort in the town of Yves.

Ce territoire était encore immergé à l’époque romaine quand sédiments argileux, cordons dunaires et galets le coupèrent définitivement de l’océan vers l’an mille.
L’homme ne tarda pas à exploiter le sable, faisant apparaître des fossés et dépressions ; la nappe phréatique, depuis affleurante, laisse apparaître des plans d'eau douce complémentaires à la lagune saumâtre, parfois encore inondée par les tempêtes.
Estran vaseux, dunes sèches et pannes, marais et roselières, prairies humides, haies de tamaris, bosquets et fourrés…Une belle mosaïque de milieux s’est installée sur ce petit coin de littoral, accueillant une multitude d’espèces....
