Spirit Square, at the junction of Yew Street and Mackenzie Avenue, has an interesting history lesson, spread out over about 15 bronze plaques encircling a large open area of concrete and tile. They cover a wide array of local subjects.

GEORGE LONEY

George Loney came to Kamloops in ca. 1880 and soon became the unofficial Poet Laureate of Kamloops. From his home on today's Royal Avenue, Loney served as poet, miner, alderman, storekeeper, and ferryman. Before a bridge was built between the North and South shores, the ferry was poled across the river using the current for power.
