De monumentale zolderverdieping waar gedurende decennia hop werd gestapeld, brengt het verhaal over het gebouw “De Stadsschaal”, de restauratie en uitbreiding in het kader van de vernieuwde bezoekersomloop. Hier hoor je het verhaal van de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de hopplant: dankzij de monniken van de St.Bertinusabdij rankte de hop naar Poperinge. Ook de zandleemgrond van Poperinge biedt een uitstekende voedingsbodem voor de hopplant.

The monumental attic where for decennia hop was stocked brings us the story on the building and its restoration with respect for both the historical value and current safety rules: quite an architectural challenge. You hear the history on the origin of hop: thanks to the monks of the St.Bertin's abbey the hop plant took root in the fertile soil of Poperinge; our sand and loam soil on top of an impermeable layer of clay is just the perfect breeding ground for this climbing plant.
