This marker to the
98th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 98th Illinois Infantry was organized at Centralia, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 3, 1862. The regiment was converted to mounted infantry on March 8, 1863. An element of "Wilder's Mounted Infantry."

Short Physical Description
7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rock-faced monument consisting of rectangular granite block with an inscribed polished front on granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position on September 20, 1863, at 12:00 noon.
