A very striking Civil War Monument was erected in 1865 by the George D. Wells Post 28 Massachusetts Grand Army of the Republic Ladies Relief Corps. It is located in an area OF Mt. Hope Cemetery that contains the graves of several Civil War soldiers.

The 15' high by 8' square granite monument contains the figure of a Union soldier wearing a cap, long overcoat and cape. He standing at parade rest holding a rifle vertically with his hands, left over right.

The base is made of polished black granite. On the front are the following engraved inscriptions:

GEORGE B. WELLS G.A.R. POST 28 DEPT. MASS.

TO HONOR THE MEN OF
WEST BOYLSTON
WHO FOUGHT TO SAVE
THE UNION

1861-1865

On the back is the image of the G.A.R. medal and the engraved inscription:

ERECTED
BY THE LADIES RELIEF CORPS.
