In 1835 Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, a Dominican missionary, came to the lead region of Wisconsin. He started estabolishing schools and preparing teachers for the children of settlers. To the Irish miners this American from Italy was known as Father Matthew Kelly. He was a civil leader as well as a spiritual leader.
