HERE ON DECEMBER 4, 1830 THE FIRST
ORGANIZED CONGREGATION IN QUINCY WAS
ESTABLISHED BY THE REVEREND ASA TURNER,
ONE OF SEVEN YALE THEOLOGICAL STUDENTS,
KNOWN AS THE "YALE BAND", WHO PLEDGED TO
SAVE THE "WEST" FOR CHRIST BY FOUNDING
CHURCHES AND COLLEGES.
THE ORIGINAL FIFTEEN MEMBERS MET FIRST
IN THE HOME OF PETER FELT AND ORGANIZED
UNDER THE PRESBYTERIAN PLAN, BUT ON
OCTOBER 10, 1833 VOTED TO CHANGE ITS
POLITY AND ITS NAME TO THE "FIRST
CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH".
ABOUT 1832, NEAR THIS SITE THEY ERECTED
THE FIRST CHURCH IN QUINCY, POPULARLY
CALLED "THE LORD'S BARN", A CRUDE WOODEN
STRUCTURE MEASURING 22 BY 26 FEET.
