A tide gauge gives the height of the river at the ford so that, if the river level is low enough, smaller vehicles, such as cars, can experience the thrill of crossing the river by the ford. Not all cars make it! There is a pub, close to the ford, with an outdoor area that is popular in summer so if a car does get stuck there is help on hand to get it out whilst causing amusement. The river is prone to flooding so even large vehicles such as HGVs and coaches cannot always cross here.
