The River Darent passes through the village of Darent in Kent. The river is crossed by a stone, arched bridge that has a width limitation so larger vehicles need to use the ford that runs alongside the bridge.

A tide gauge gives the height of the river at the ford so that, if the river level is low enough, smaller vehicles, such as cars, can experience the thrill of crossing the river by the ford. Not all cars make it! There is a pub, close to the ford, with an outdoor area that is popular in summer so if a car does get stuck there is help on hand to get it out whilst causing amusement. The river is prone to flooding so even large vehicles such as HGVs and coaches cannot always cross here.

If other than explain...: Paved on the approach and then rocky river bed at the crossing.
