(Front base): In Commemoration of the valor of CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS, who fell in the Great Battle of Murfreesboro, Dec. 31, 1862, and January 2, 1863, and in minor engagements in this vicinity, this monument is erected
(Base proper right): "Lest we Forget", 1861 -- 1865
(Base proper left): A Monument for our soldiers - Built of a People's Love
(Base rear): Honor Decks the Turf that Wraps Their Clay
Proper Description: "A bronze soldier figure atop a base of granite blocks. The soldier steps forward onto his bent proper right leg. His proper left leg is extended behind his body with only the ball of the foot touching the ground. He holds a rifle across his body, with his proper left hand on the forestock and his proper right hand on the trigger guard. He wears a uniform including a brimmed hat and carries a bedroll across his chest." ~ Smithsonian American Art Museum
