This large chair is actually the second one at this location.
The original giant chair in Old Anacostia was made of solid mahogany from Honduras, a gift from Bassett Furniture Industries to honor Curtis Brothers' “outstanding leadership and service to the public.” It was built in the late 1950's and is 19 1/2 feet tall. On August 23, 2005, the chair was disassembled because it was beginning to rot and a collapse was feared. It is now in storage. The new replica is made of aluminum and was put back on display in April of 2006.
It is located off of Martin Luther King Drive SE. You can visit it at any time, day or night.
