In Natick, off Pleasant Street South, is the Belkin Family Lookout Farm.
The farm is located in the scenic village of South Natick. From South Natick Center at the intersection of Eliot Street (Mass. Route 16), Union Street, and Pleasant Street, go south on Pleasant Street for about a half mile to the farm on the right.
The farm, currently owned by the Belkin family, is a combined farm and orchard with 180 acres having 60,000 fruit trees. In addition to apple trees, the farm grows peaches, strawberries, pears, and pumpkins. See the web site for details on what is in season on a particular day, activities and rates.
The web site provides a history of the farm as well. Farming activity started in 1651, when Rev. John Eliot and other 'settlers' came to this location and built their settlement in today's South Natick Village. The account that I understood, differs slightly from the web site. I understood that the 'settlers' were Native Americans, known as 'Praying Indians.' who converted to Christianity and settled here to live as other English Christians. They used the land here to grow their crops and feed cows, so farming activity likely did start about 1651. The current owners bought the farm in 2005.
