When JR Sheffer and Heather Ferguson left the University of Iowa in 1993 they had a vision. The vision was to create an eatery with a menu and an atmosphere that carried on a tradition of hospitality, quality and value that you only find at the finest small town restaurants in the Midwest. The best food would be a sampling of the best of the best restaurant items that the JR, Heather and their friends have experienced on and off menus across America’s Heartland.

The vision began in Ames Iowa where the students of Dog Town were treated to a new night club called “Tazzles”. Tazzles offered discount cocktails and the biggest and loudest dance floor in Cyclone History. Tazzles night club soon partnered up with Winston’s and consecutively opened Shamrox and the Dean’s List. But after running nightclubs in Ames for a better part of the 90’s, JR and Heather decided that the Cyclone Nation would do okay with out them and it was time to get their restaurant up and running.

In 1999 The Sheffers found out about a little out of the way watering hole that was for sale in Indianola, Iowa. After discovering this little eatery in it’s prime location, JR and Heather also found a community that made them feel like this was the place that they wanted to raise their family and their vision in.

The Sports Page Menu...

Ah yes, the Sports Page’s ever evolving always delicious menu. It started on a napkin during the college years when JR declared that all nachos are not created equal. “I got sick of eating the cheese and meat off of the top of the nachos and all you have left is a pile of naked tortilla chips,” the young yet to be announced restaurateur from Osceola declared.

The Sports Page Menu is constructed from original SP recipes as well as classic samplings from eateries both near and far. JR’s attention to detail includes layering the Layered Nachos so you don’t end up with “naked tortilla chips”, to having the chefs pay meticulous attention to the way a sandwich is built so the cheese melts perfectly.

One of the Signature Items on the SP Menu would be the Half Pound Burgers. These jumbo delights are made from fresh lean beef patties that are never ever frozen. From Daily Lunch Specials to Friday night Ribs and Saturday night Prime Rib the SP menu also features items that are named after things that are close to JR and Heather’s hearts. The Hayden Chili-Cheese Fries were named for the University of Iowa’s famed Football Coach. The Steak Sandwedge and the Tiger Loin were named because of JR and Heather’s love of the game of golf.

The Sports Page Grill has evolved into locations in Valley Junction, Pella, Ankeny, Winterset and Indianola, as well as a little bar called Brickhouse Tavern, located on the square in downtown Indianola…..but that’s another story.

Thank you for stopping by The Page, we saved you a seat!
