Der griechischen Sage nach wurde Danaë, Tochter des Königs Akrisios von Argos, von ihrem Vater nach einer Prophezeiung des Orakels von Delphi zeitlebens eingekerkert. Das Orakel sagte voraus, dass der König eines Tages vom Sohn seiner Tochter getötet werden würde. Doch Zeus, in Danaë verliebt, gelangte in Gestalt eines Goldregens in den Turm und schwängerte Danaë. Diese brachte Perseus zur Welt, der den König später tötete.
Gustav Seitz (1906 - 1969) zeigt Danaë als aufreizend und erotisch sich darbietende Frau - wartend auf den Göttervater Zeus. Sinnbildlich steht sie hier für die Liebe. Die "Große Danaë" ist ein Geschenk von Edith Ruß an die Stadt Oldenburg.

According to the Greek legend Danaë, daughter of King Acrisius of Argos, was imprisoned by her father after a prophecy of the oracle of Delphi. The oracle predicted that the king would one day be killed by his daughter's son. But Zeus fell in love with Danaë, came into the tower in the form of a shower of gold and impregnated Danaë. She gave birth to Perseus who later killed the king.
Gustav Seitz (1906 - 1969) shows Danaë as provocative and sexy woman which is manifesting itself - waiting for the God Zeus. Symbolically she stands for love. The "Große Danaë" is a gift from Edith Ruß to the city of Oldenburg.
