The postman of Monks Barton, Sam Nelms, finds two cottages on his rounds have been deserted, despite there being fresh food on the breakfast tables. Two couples have gone missing. One couple, the Goodfellows, are caretakers at The Priory, owned by Lynton Pargeter. Barnaby and Jones take the keys to The Priory and go up there. When they get there they find that the house has been broken into. In the grounds of the Priory Psychic Cyrus LeVanu is holding a spiritualist meeting.

Later Cyrus LeVanu performs an exorcism in the woods and pierces the hand of a buried body with his shooting stick. The body is identified as that of an antiques thief from London.

Barnaby is intrigued to know why the postman entered the properties and correctly deduces that there must be a parcel to sign for. So where is the parcel. Nelms admits to having opened the parcel and gives Barnaby a jade figurine from the parcel. Barnaby guesses that the Goodfellows have been stealing antiques from The Priory.

Lynton Pargeter calls at the Thomas’s cottage and finds Molly Thomas shot in the back in her bedroom. Barnaby sees lights in the woods and when he searches the woods he finds Stanley Goodfellow gibbering. Doctors say he is suffering from severe trauma.

Some time later, Reverend Stone, the local vicar, performs an exorcism in the woods and finds the body of Colin Thomas. Only Nesta Goodfellow is now unaccounted for.

A black pick up truck has been seen in the woods and in the village. Attempts to find the driver come to nought until Barnaby follows it through the woods one night. Unfortunately Barnaby’s car gets stuck in mud. Doggedly he follows the truck on foot. The truck has gone to The Priory and has been loaded with antiques by Pargeter. Jones has got WPC Gail Stephens to tail the truck to its destination, an antiques shop. Barnaby concludes that Pargeter is an antiques fence.

Barnaby goes to see Stanley Goodfellow at the mental hospital, but finds he has disappeared and there is a bloodied knife in the garden. The knife is traced back to The Priory, where Barnaby finds Pargeter impaled in an iron maiden. Searching for Stanley, Barnaby discovers him in the woods. Barnaby tells Stanley that the gibbering act doesn’t work. He confesses that the Goodfellows and the Thomas family were stealing antiques from Pargeter. The Thomas family wanted out so Stanley killed them. His wife Nesta was about to run off with Pargeter so he dealt with Pargeter. Nesta is found alive in a nearby well in the woods.
