The villages of Upper and Lower Warden have been at loggerheads for centuries. The rivalry turns deadly over a book, The House of Satan, written by the Victorian Ellis Bell of Lower Warden. The Smythe Websters of Upper Warden have appropriated the book after copyright expired and turned it into a horror movie. At a launch party for the film the star of the movie, Larry Smith, son of Rev Simon Smythe Webster, is blown to bits in the summer house Ellis Bell allegedly used to write the book.

A little while later the director of the movie, Frank Smythe Webster, is electrocuted on an exercise bike. Barnaby has to investigate the family history and the rivalry between the two villages.

The explosives for the first murder were stolen from the local TA. There are only two keys, one for the armourer, a bookshop owner in Lower Warden who wrote a rejected film script based on Ellis Bell’s original book, and the commander of the TA, Rupert Smythe Webster. Rupert Smythe Webster admits that the key did go missing for a few days, but is now back in his possession. Barnaby’s attention shifts to the Smythe Webster’s cook, Danny Pinchel. Pinchel has a criminal record for burning down the cricket pavilion, and is from Lower Warden. However, he is well liked by the Smythe Webster’s and is line to become manager of their country club.

Pinchel is a moto cross enthusiast, and so is his friend, Phil Harrison. Harrison repairs windmills and is ex army, versed in explosives. At the moment he is repairing the windmill of Sarah Proudie, keen socialist of Lower Warden and keeper of the Ellis Bell museum. She is also grand daughter of Ellis Bell. Barnaby happens to pass the windmill when a motorcyclist rushes to the mill and pins a note on the sails, saying “Judas”. Barnaby deduces that there is a conspiracy between Harrison and Pinchel and that they have fallen out. Before he can arrest them Pinchel is found drowned in gespachio soup. Barnaby arrests Harrison. Ironically Harrison is actually the love child of Rupert Smythe Webster and would have inherited the family estate.
