The U.S.S Maine National Memorial commemorates the 260 American sailors who died when the battleship Maine exploded in the Havana Harbor, Cuba in 1898. Although the reason for the explosion is considered now to be unclear, the event precipitated the War Between Spain and the United States.
This impressive monument is 63' high, 74' log and 55' wide. It consists of a granite pylon topped with a gilded bronze allegorical figure of representing Columbia Triumphant and embellished with nine marble figures. Jutting out from the west side of the base is the prow of a ship.
The monument was created by Attilio Piccirilli and the architect was Harold Van Buren Magonigle. The monument was placed in the park in 1913.
