Stafford Springs, CT residents Michael Tarrou, 38, and Amy King, 29, were United Airlines flight attendants that lived together in Stafford Springs, CT. On September 11, 2001 they traveled to Logan International Airport in Boston to board their assigned flight, Flight 175, to Los Angeles International Airport. This flight was hijacked by five al-Qaeda terrorists and flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, killing all 56 people aboard.

On September 11, 2011, on the 10th anniversary of he event, their hometown of Stafford Springs dedicated a 9/11 memorial in their honor. An I-beam from the rubble of the World Trade Center is mounted on a concrete pedestal. Among the several plaques is one, on the south side of the memorial, in memory of Michael Tarrou and Amy King.
