"Chapel of the Chimes began as a crematory as well as a columbarium building in 1909. One of its innovative features was the use of the first electric crematorium in the world.

In 1928 the original building was enlarged and renovated based on the architectural plans of famed Bay Area architect Julia Morgan.

Architect Aaron Green created six additions to the columbarium in 1959.

The Chapel of the Chimes popular Jazz at the Chimes concert series returned Jan. 20 for the 2013 season, featuring Bay Area jazz luminaries pianist-composer Larry Vuckovich, vocalist Jackie Ryan and five-time-Grammy-nominated percussionist John Santos. 1

On March 30, 1999 the Chapel of the Chimes was designated Oakland Landmark #LM 97-193." (visit link)
