Dès le début de la conception de Parc Disneyland, un Space Mountain devait être construit. Mais en raison du nouveau thème développé dans Discoveryland, la version de Disneyland ou de Magic Kingdom ne pouvait convenir. Ainsi le concept de Discovery Mountain vit le jour, basé sur l'œuvre de Jules Verne, incluant un voyage dans l'espace inspiré du livre « De la Terre à la Lune ». L'attraction ne put être construite pour l'ouverture du parc en raison de son coût. Elle fut reportée pour plus tard. Dès 1993, les problèmes financiers du parc ont compromis l'avenir de l'attraction. Le projet fut réduit et la construction lancée afin d'attirer des visiteurs. Le nom de l'attraction fut changé à la dernière minute en Space Mountain : De la Terre à la Lune.
L'attraction Space Mountain : Mission 2 est la version de Space Mountain ouverte en 2005, toujours basée en partie sur l'œuvre de Jules Verne. Cette version peut être considérée comme une suite logique de l'ancienne : après avoir emmené ses visiteurs vers la lune, Space Mountain envoie désormais ses visiteurs bien plus loin, aux confins de l'univers. Le décor se rapproche de celui du Space Mountain 2 de Disneyland. La lune de Méliès a laissé sa place à une supernova, elle est maintenant considérée comme étant le premier astre sur le passage de la navette.

Technological enhancements to a computerised ride system result in an experience you've got to fly to believe. Close up, Space Mountain is a breath-taking sight. At night the huge brass dome glows green and gold. As the cannon pounds and recoils, shafts of light spray through the jets of steam. It's pure fantasy in the oldest and greatest Disney tradition (yet built with the latest space-technology specifications). It looks back to a time when extravagant mysteries about space still existed, in an homage to the stories of French visionary Jules Verne. Every 36 seconds the Cannon Columbiad fires, launching a 24 passenger rocket train through its five metre wide barrel. Intrepid space travellers aboard shoot to the top in a heart-stopping 1.8 seconds. At the summit, they experience a moment of zero gravity, before descending into the mountain and the dark, black depths of outer space for a thrilling, high-speed adventure from the earth to the moon.
