Location: The official address for Furness Park is 99 Furness Way, Ottawa, Ontario. This family-oriented community “block” park is located in the southern portion of Ottawa, in Ottawa’s Gloucester – South Nepean ward, west of the Rideau River, and just north of the Chapman Mills Conservation Area. The park occupies a small city block, bounded on the north by Lydia Way, the east by Floden Way, the south by Versilia Drive, and the east by Furness Way, from which the park gets its name. There is an official City of Ottawa sign for the park near the park’s northeast corner.

Description: Furness Park is roughly rectangular, and fairly small, stretching roughly 100 meters east to west, and 60 meters north to south. Asphalt paths lead into the park from three of the four corners (all but the northeast corner), and from the middles of the longer, east-west sides. The triangular northeast half of the park is primarily green space in the form of a mowed grassy area, supplemented with shrubs and trees that break it up somewhat; however, this portion’s terrain is sufficiently uneven and sufficiently broken up that it is, perhaps intentionally given its apparent focus on smaller children, not particularly suited to activities such as soccer or flag football. The southwest corner contains the park’s several facilities, with additional landscaped green space near park’s center. Housing density is fairly high in the vicinity of the park, leading it to be well-used in the summer.

Facilities: Despite its small size, Furness Park contains several facilities that make it valuable to the surrounding community, which includes a good representation of families with small children. These facilities include a swing set suited to smaller children, a play structure surrounded by sand and including some permanent riding toys mounted on springs, a small shelter with a picnic table, numerous sturdy benches, and several low rock walls that serve as part of the park’s landscaping, but also provide for additional, less formal, seating. Parking for Furness Park is exclusively of the on-street variety.

References: Furness Park appears in the City of Ottawa's official database of municipal parks. (See link URL.) It appears, clearly identified as a park in both name and icon, in both Google Earth and Google Maps, with images from all around the park available via the latter’s Street View feature.
