"In 1900, a class of young women from an exclusive private school go on an excursion to the isolated Hanging Rock, deep in the Australian bush. The excursion ends in tragedy when three girls and a teacher mysteriously vanish after climbing the rock. Only one girl returns, with no memory of what has become of the others..." (from the rear cover "Penguin edition" 2009)
"Whether Picnic at Hanging Rock is fact or fiction, my readers must decide for themselves. As the fateful picnic took place in the year nineteen hundred, and all the characters who appear in this book are long since dead, it hardly seems important." (Author's foreword)
Hanging Rock is now a reserve with facilities including a shop. A path leads to the peak which includes interesting fluted rock formations. A visitor entrance fee is also payable on entering the reserve.
The locality became the setting for Joan Lindsay's haunting novel in which things only get worse after the disappearance of the girls.
In 1975, the novel was made into a cinematic movie of the same name.
