Silver City was a small village on the Chisholm Trail, which was depopulated in 1890 when the railroad extended their line and the town of Minco was established. This cemetery is the only remaining feature of this town.
Within the cemetery are 64 burials. Granny Herman's headstone is a flat granite marker reading:
Granny Vicey
Herman
1800 - 1900
One hundred years was a very long time to live during the 1800s. She's rather remarkable.
* The year Granny was born, Washington DC was established as the capital of the United States.
* When she was ten, Beethoven wrote his first piano piece, and the U.S. annexed West Florida from Spain.
* The U.S. Congress established Indian Territory when Granny was 25, leading the way for the state of Oklahoma.
* When she was 45, the U.S. annexed the Republic of Texas, and Florida became a state.
* She was 50 the year of the first public demonstration of ice made by refrigeration.
* Abraham Lincoln was elected President the year Granny turned 60.
* She was 62, when the first U.S. income tax was levied.
* The first Kentucky Derby was run when she was 75.
* Ellis Island was opened as an immigration depot when she was 90.
*The year Granny died, the first hamburger was created in Connecticut.
She sure saw a lot of things during her lifetime!
