Backdoor BBQ is located in a storefront along N.W. 23rd Street in an area that is having a renaissance with new business opening every week. With very little parking on the street (and whatever you do, don't park in the large parking lot to the west which belongs to the beauty supply or you'll be towed), your remaining choice is to park in the parking lot to the rear and come in the back door - Hence the Name!!
This is a Texas-style BBQ joint, with booths and a long, tall center table over which hangs a ladder and about a dozen drop lights. There is an authentic tin ceiling from the old days, and framed feed sacks along the wall. You go to the counter and order your food, and then choose a seat. The food includes the usual BBQ'd meats, by the meal, or by the pound to take home, with some unusual sides such as fried pickled okra. The link below shows a newspaper interview with one of the owners, Kathryn Mathis who explains their culinary arts and describes some of the dishes served.
We got a kick out of the restrooms. The sinks were galvanized buckets set in an oval in the counter, and the paper towels were supported by a bent, threaded plumber's pipe. Definitely a place to visit and enjoy a meal.
