It is believed that Aké was first occupied beginning in the late Preclassic period, around 350 B.C. through to the Postclassic period during the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan. Infamous explorers, Stephens and Catherwood, visited the Aké ruins during their last trip to the Yucatan. This site consists more than 2 hectares of land and, in addition, you will see numerous ruins dispersed throughout the residential area of the village. This site is quite unique and smaller than the more popular sites. The local church sits on one of the pyramids as well. There are four excavated buildings on site, and many still to be excavated. What is most exciting is that there are several very obvious unexcavated structures. The land is completely flat and every now and then there is a mound covered by trees and jungle and when you take a closer look you can see intricately placed rocks and boulders. Furthermore, this archaeological site boasts a series of extensive road systems, or causeways, known as “sacbeobs” dating back to 800 A.D. The longest sacbeob connects Aké to Izamel, some 25km away. These causeways have not yet been fully excavated, but you can view them in the jungles surrounding the site. The caretaker has cleared/mowed paths to various un-excavated points of interest on the property, for easy finding.
Location of Pyramid: The pyramid can be seen from the town centre square of the Village of Ake in Yucatan, Mexico

Approximate Date of Construction: 205-550 A.D.
