Ein erstes Kuhhirtendenkmal mit mehreren Reliefplatten wurde 1908 nach den Entwürfen von Professor August Schmiemann aus Münster gefertigt und in der Nähe der Propsteikirche St. Peter und Paul errichtet. Dieses Denkmal wurde jedoch während des Zweiten Weltkriegs für die Rüstungsproduktion eingeschmolzen.
Eine Nachgestaltung des Denkmals des Kortebusch und seines Hirtenhunds vom Bochumer Bildhauer Walter Kruse wurde 1962 in der Nähe des ursprünglichen Orts aufgestellt und erinnert heute an die Zeit, als Bochum noch ein Ackerbürgerstädtchen war.
Das Denkmal steht an einer Stelle, an der sich in der Zeit von 1697 bis 1862 das alte Bochumer Rathaus im Fachwerkhausstil sowie seit 1790 ein Marktplatz (samt einem Schandpfahl und eines Prangers für Diebe) befanden.
Auf der Gemeindeweide selbst entstand der heutige Stadtpark Bochum.
Fritz Kortebusch war der letzte städtische Kuhhirte Bochums. Von 1850 bis 1877 trieb Kortebusch das Vieh der Bürger Bochums zur Vöde (ein etwa 2,8 km² großes Areal mit Gärten und Gemeindeweide) und führte es zur Tränke an der Trankgasse. Damals besaß fast jede Familie noch eine Ziege und eine Kuh zur Selbstversorgung.

The first Kuhhirtendenkmal with several relief records was made in 1908 according to the draughts by professor August Schmiemann from Münster and was established near the Propsteikirche Saint Peter and Paul. Nevertheless, this monument was melted during the Second World War for the armament production.
A postcreation of the monument of the Kortebusch and his shepherd's dog of Bochum sculptor Walter Kruse was put up in 1962 near the original place and today reminds of the time when Bochum was one more citizen farmer small town.
The monument stands at a place at which in the time from 1697 to 1862 the old Bochum city hall were in the half-timbered house style as well as since 1790 a marketplace (with a wicked post and a pillory for thieves).
On the local pasture itself there originated the today's town park Bochum.
Fritz Kortebusch was the last urban cowhand of Bochum. From 1850 to 1877 Kortebusch did the cattle of the citizens of Bochum to the Vöde (about 2.8 km ² big area with gardens and local pasture) and led it to the drinks in the drink lane. At that time almost every family owned one more goat and a cow to the self-sufficiency.
