Das Schloss wurde 1531 mit vier Flügeln fertiggestellt. Zuvor stand hier die Burg Waldersee, welche jedoch durch das Hochwasser der Mulde zerstört wurde.
Die Errichtung des Stadtschlosses wurde von Johann IV. als Bauherrn betreut. Fürst Leopold I. nahm die erste bauliche Veränderung vor, in dem er den Nordflügel abbrechen und durch einen Zaun ersetzen lies.
Leider ist das Stadtschloss in seiner früheren Pracht nur noch auf Bildern wiederzuentdecken, da es durch die Bombardierung der Stadt im März 1945 zerstört wurde.
Mit dem Ausbau der Strassen, stand die Schlossruine der DDR im weg. Somit wurden der Sued und Ost-Flügel gesprengt, um den Bau der Ludwigshafenerstrasse zu ermöglichen. Der Johannbau wurde nach dem Bauherrn des Stadtschlosses benannt und von 1990 -1997 sowie 2001 bis 2005 saniert.
