Near Balmoral Castle, the church commonly known as Crathie Kirk is rich with history. The site has been home to a place of worship since the sixth century, and the remains of the 14th century church as still visible. According to the booklet "Crathie Church Royal Deeside", "Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the present church in 1893 and the new church was completed and dedicated in 1895." This same booklet details the gifts, furnishings and layout of the church. The south transept of the church is "set apart for the use of the Sovereign and members of the Royal Family and the Royal Household. The guide at the church explained members of the Royal Family use a separate entrance but do worship with members of the parish.
