The life-size brass statues of comedian Ken Dodd and politician Bessie Braddock were officially unveiled on the concourse of Lime Street Station 11th June 2009.
Sculptor Tom Murphy spent a year creating the statues which are called Chance Meeting and stand on the site of the former Virgin Trains welcome lounge.
Doddy is seen carrying an overnight bag and wielding his famous tickling stick, while Bessie Braddock holds a handbag in one hand and in the other an egg, as she was the politician responsible for putting the lion standard mark on British eggs.
Kenneth Arthur "Ken" Dodd, OBE (born 8 November 1927) is an English comedian, singer-songwriter and actor, he is clearly identified by his trademark frizzy hair and protruding teeth, his "tickling stick" and his upbeat greeting of "How tickled I am!"
Elizabeth Margaret Braddock JP (24 September 1899 – 13 November 1970), known as Bessie Braddock, was a British Labour politician. Nicknamed 'Battling Bessie', she was an ardent socialist and fiery campaigner.
Throughout her long political career, she took a passionate interest in matters relating to maternity, child welfare and youth crime.
At her funeral in 1970, Harold Wilson said "She was born to fight for the people of the docks, of the slums, of the factories and in every part of the city where people needed help".
The artwork was commissioned by Merseytravel as part of the company’s public art programme and in order to honour two of the city’s most high-profile figures.
