Once Oregon's second largest city, it is now abandoned except for two caretakers houses for the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Department. During the workday ODF&W workers commute here to maintain the land as it goes back to it's primitive state. During WWII four Infantry Divisions trained here, two at a time. Right after Pearl Harbor, the construction started, and by 1947 it was being torn down. Even though the Department of Fish & Wildlife is still taking care of the land, the city that was once here if gone. John H. Baker's book, "Camp Adair, Oregon's largest Ghost town" tells all the details about it's construction, use and final demise. If you are standing at the coordinates, you are in the army Field House. To the west is a parking area by the Memorial Garden. The Garden contains the monuments for the four infantry divisions that trained here. To the north of the Garden is the marker telling about the town of Wells that was wiped out to create space for the camp. The map in the second photo is posted near the Memorial Garden.
Reason for Abandonment: Economic

Date Abandoned: 01/01/1947
