Folsom Prison was built by inmates in the 1880's. The front gate on Prison Road in Folsom California serves as a prime photo opportunity.
The officers in the nearby guard shack are generally willing to take your photo in front of the gates. At one time they had a ball and chain you could pose with also, but we are not certain it is still there. The nearby Folsom Prison Museum has many tourist attractions.
What is now called "Old Folsom" is made of granite from nearby Granite Bay. The gates are imposing.
The East Gate is in one corner of a mammoth stone wall with a copper pointed roof of a watch tower just behind it.

The cover photo is of the prison gates taken in 1952. Tip of the hat to John at MyFolsom.com for use of the photo.
Year photo was taken: 1952
