This Confederate Monument sits on the grounds of the Sussex County Courthouse in Sussex, Virginia. The monument is showing some sign of wear after almost 100 years. Some of the granite blocks are shifting and have some fractures. Otherwise, it's being kept clean and spruced up.
This monument is in the traditional style, but does not have a specific inscription dedicating the monument to Sussex County Confederate soldiers. There is, however, a list of local Confederate units from Sussex Count inscribed on the back.
The main inscription reads:
"THE PRINCIPLES FOR
WHICH THEY FOUGHT
LIVE ETERNALLY."
Elsewhere on he monument are two crossed Confederate battle flags with "1681-1865" inscribed above; the words "OUR CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS" and the dedication inscription from the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Images of all inscriptions are in the waymark gallery.
