Folsom Prison was built by inmates in the 1880's. What is now called "Old Folsom" is made of granite from nearby Granite Bay. The gates are imposing and fear-inspiring. They use the old style flat slat construction methods.
The East Gate is in one corner of a mammoth stone wall with a copper pointed roof of a watch tower just behind it.

There is a guard shack nearby and the guards are often willing to take your photo in front of the gates. There is also a very enjoyable Prison Museum with a yard full of prison artifacts that make great photo opportunities.
