The Sapphire Coast, the southernmost coastline of NSW, is named after the sparkling deep blue colour of the sea and the area offers stunning views of so many beautiful unspoilt beaches, enough to satisfy every wave-watcher.
At Bermagui, the scenic headland loop road leads to the Blue Pool – off Scenic Drive, watch for sign on ocean side. This is a large ocean rock pool, surrounded by the breaking surf and deep blue ocean. Stunning views can be seen from this point looking along the southern coastline. For those that love wavy places this is the ideal spot to come for a swim, sheltered behind the rock barrier but very close to the wild breaking ocean waves on the other side.

However, do take notice of the Warning sign at the top of the steps down to the rocks, in heavy seas this is a dangerous place as swimmers can be washed out to sea. When the ocean is rough the waves breaking over the rocky coast are spectacular but it is best to do your wave-watching from the safety of the carpark on the Headland, well above the pool level.

Other surf beaches you may like to visit at Bermagui: Surfing Beaches – Beares Beach – off Scenic Drive. Mooreheads Beach – at the end of Wapengo Street on the northern side of the harbour is an excellent surf beach. Haywards Beach – enter from southern or northern branches of the old highway (no through road). Cuttagee Beach – south of town is a good, uncrowded surf beach. Camel Rock Beach – north of town is an excellent surfing beach.

Wavy Place and Whale watching: The Sapphire Coast is regarded as one of the best places in Australia to spot whales and the numbers visiting these waters shows no sign of decreasing.
Between September and late November whales return along the eastern coast of Australia on their southern leg of their migration. Between May and July the whales migrate north to warmer waters to give birth or mate, however the whales are usually farther off shore and not as easy to spot as on the southward leg.
