"Construída no século XVI, integrava o conjunto arquitectónico do convento dos Capuchos que em 1836, após execução da lei de extinção das ordens religiosas foi, trocado pelas vetustas instalações da rua da Misericórdia, no quarteirão poente da actual Câmara Municipal. Logo após a sua ocupação a Mesa da altura foi obrigada a proceder a obras de restauro e conservação, um processo que gradualmente se tem vindo a verificar até ao presente. A mais recente intervenção foi efectuada na área geral dos tectos, soalhos e paredes afim de adaptar o edifício às novas tecnologias, caso da rede electrica e de som."

"Foi do Convento dos Capuchos e passou para a Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Barcelos em 1836.

A Igreja deve ter sido bastante rica, mas um incêndio em finais do terceiro quartel do século XIX destruiu-lhe muito do seu recheio barroco.
Possui uma imagem de Santa Maria do século XVI.
Nela, quase todos os dias se celebra a Eucaristia de corpo presente, dado a Santa Casa ter ao dispor dos barcelenses as suas capelas funerárias para acolher os irmãos falecidos.
É gerida pela Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Barcelos ."
